French Toast Casserole – Food Faith Fitness

This French Toast Casserole is sure to sweeten up your next early-morning event!

Growing up, my dad made the absolute best French toast. On weekends, I’d try to replicate his magic in the kitchen, but let’s just say it didn’t always go… smoothly. I’d use bread that was too fresh, forget to preheat the pan, or make some other rookie mistake. After a few trial-and-error weekends, we came up with a solution: a hands-off recipe that delivered delicious results every time — and that’s how this French toast casserole was born!

This dish has all the sweet, creamy, cinnamon-maple flavor of classic French toast, but in an easy-to-make casserole form that’s perfect for sharing. Whether it’s for a weekend brunch, a potluck, or a holiday breakfast, this recipe shines. My family takes Christmas morning breakfast very seriously, and I’m thrilled to bring this crowd-pleasing dish to the table this year.

The best part? You can prepare it the night before, letting the bread soak up all the rich flavors, while the topping sets separately. The next morning, simply add the topping to the dish and pop the whole thing in the oven for a warm, decadent breakfast that’s as effortless as it is delicious. It’s perfect for making mornings feel special without the stress — just how Dad would want it!

Is French Toast Casserole Healthy?

French toast casserole does incorporate a lot of milk, eggs, and heavy cream. If you’re trying to cut fat and dairy out of your diet, I would recommend avoiding this one! That said, while French toast casserole is a rather sweet option for your breakfast, there are plenty of ways to modify it to suit your diet. First, choose your own bread: this recipe works great with brioche or French bread, but I love to do whole grain. Then, choose your toppings! Serving your French toast casserole with fresh fruits like bananas and berries allows you to incorporate lots of nutrients into the dish.

FAQs & Tips

How to Make Ahead and Store

This French toast casserole was designed to be made ahead of time. You’ll want to let your bread mixture soak for at least several hours — I always do overnight to be sure. You should also let your crumble mixture sit overnight before adding it to the rest of the casserole. Store leftover French toast casserole in the fridge, covered in plastic wrap or sealed in airtight containers, for 3 to 4 days. Reheat it in the microwave, and then add toppings.

What Bread To Use

You can use whatever bread you prefer for your French toast casserole, so long as it’s thick and absorbent. French bread, challah, brioche, and sourdough are all great choices for this dish. Ideally, they should be a day or two old already, for maximum absorption.

What Toppings To Add

The great thing about French toast casserole is that it’s totally customizable! Just like a classic French toast, you can top your casserole with anything you’d like. Try blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, bananas, peanut butter, maple syrup, powdered sugar, or whatever sounds yummy!
